L’«Esquisse du Jugement Universel», singolare parodia del Giudizio Universale a metà strada tra rappresentazione teatrale e dialogo satirico, costituisce la prima esperienza letteraria di Alfieri. Viene letta nel corso delle riunioni serali che il giovane ‘philosophe’ tiene insieme ai vecchi compagni d’Accademia con i quali aveva fondato la «Société des Sansguignon». Pubblicata nel 1912, l’opera viene presentata per la prima volta in un’edizione scrupolosamente commentata, curata da uno dei più autorevoli studiosi dell’Astigiano.
Alfieri’s first literary effort is an unusual parody of the Last Judgement, something between a theatrical representation and a satirical dialogue. It was read during the evening gatherings the young philosopher held with his old Academy companions with whom he had founded the «Société des Sansguignon». Published in 1912, this work is published here for the first time in a version scrupulously annotated by one of the most authoritative Alfieri scholars.

Beginning with the founding myth of Narcissus, the work analyzes Levi’s category of «reality» , which can be shaped by a joining of image and word, the basis of Levi’s humanism. It is only through access to the «portrait» and to «history» that man can be saved from the menace of the real, which in Levi’s writings takes on a number of shapes, among them that of «The Sacred» and «Futility». The appendix comprises three texts by Levi (two of them unpublished) and one by Italo Calvino.

La genesi filologica delle allusioni che vengono ricostruite nei vari saggi diviene per l'autore il veicolo di conseguenze semiologiche cruciali per il funzionamento del testo.
Organized in five close-reading essays on the "sources" of the «Decameron», this book reconstructs the influence that Latin classics (and their various late-antique and medieval offspring) exerted on the generic identity of Boccaccio's masterpiece. Under the lens of the author, the intertextual fabric so reconstructed ceases to be a mere filigree of literary reminiscences to become a system of signals that invites the readers to engage in an active interpretation of the text.
The volume moves from an analysis of the poetics laid out in the outermost frame of the work (Proem, Introduction to Day Four, Conclusion of the Author) to the dialogue in which the individual storytellers engage through their narratives. Testing the limits of interpretability, the author treats the philological genesis of the allusions reconstructed in each essay as a crucial element in the semiotics of the text.

Discepolo del Verrocchio e compagno a Roma, sui ponteggi della Sistina, di Perugino, Ghirlandaio, Botticelli e Signorelli, Bartolomeo – uno dei massimi esponenti della cultura figurativa tardoquattrocentesca – per quanto di natali e di formazione fiorentini, svolse la sua attività prevalentemente ad Arezzo. In questa città, per i molteplici incarichi ricevuti, fu ben presto coadiuvato da una bottega, il cui più fecondo rappresentante, Domenico Pecori, continuò, anche dopo la morte del maestro, a soddisfare la committenza cittadina e dei suoi dintorni.
Apprenticed to Verrocchio and companion of Perugino, Ghirlandaio, Botticelli and Signorelli on the scaffolding in the Sistine Chapel of Rome, Bartolomeo was one of the major exponents of figurative art of the late 15th century. Florentine by birth and education, he was chiefly active in Arezzo. Following the numerous commissions which he received there he was soon backed by a workshop whose most prolific member, Domenico Pecori, continued to execute the commissions given him after the master’s death by the city of Arezzo and its neighbouring communities.

Instancabile disegnatore, strenuo difensore della validità dell’illustrazione, contro il dilagante impiego della fotografia, Pennell tornò in Toscana per illustrare a colori «Italian Hours» di Henry James. Il catalogo comprende i saggi di A. Brilli e di S. Neri su Pennell viaggiatore in Toscana e sulla moglie Elizabeth Robins Pennell, giornalista e scrittrice.
A catalogue of the drawings of the American illustrator Joseph Pennell (1858-1926) at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Virtually all those which are reproduced here illustrate the historian Maurice Hewlett’s «The Road in Tuscany. A Commentary». Tireless draftsman, vigorous champion of the power of illustration as opposed to the spreading use of photography, Pennell returned to Tuscany to illustrate Henry James’s «Italian Hours». The catalogue includes essays by A. Brill and S. Neri on Pennell as traveler in Tuscany and on his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell, author and journalist.

The volume illustrates a very productive yet little known period in the history of Lombard sculpture, the International Gothic Age, which has its roots in the 14th century and continues well beyond the middle of the 15th. The Babel-like building site of Milan’s new cathedral, begun in 1386, housed hundreds of statues and reliefs by sculptors who converged there from all parts of Europe, and it is the ideal source for reconstructing this period.

Questo libro intende confutare questa tenace posizione storiografica, smentendo la visione di un’antichità scarsamente interessata alla tecnologia, proponendo invece una panoramica critica dei principali sviluppi della meccanica in età ellenistica e romana.
In the historiography of the twentieth century, antiquity, and especially the Roman world, has been considered a period of scientific and technological stagnation, incapable of formulating an idea of progress similar to ours, thus furthering, albeit unconsciously, its own decline. The author refutes this stubborn historiographical approach by giving a critical overview of the development of applied and theoretical mechanics in the Hellenistic and Roman era.

Dallo studio delle riviste inglesi della metà dell’Ottocento vien fuori un Mazzini teorico della democrazia che, dopo il suo arrivo in Inghilterra, polemizza sulla nascita della democrazia in Europa con i democratici polacchi e con i democratici comunisti Engels e Marx. Nel 1850 la rivista «The Red Republican» pubblica nel numero di settembre il «Manifesto to the peoples» di Mazzini e nel numero di novembre il «Manifesto of the Communist Party» di Engels e Marx.
An examination of British journals of the mid-nineteenth century reveals Giuseppe Mazzini as a theoretician of democracy who, after his arrival in Britain, participated in the polemics about the birth of democracy in Europe with the Polish democrats and the Communist democrats Marx and Engels. In the September issue of 1850 the journal «The Red Republican» published, in English, Mazzini’s «Manifesto to the peoples» and in the November issue an English translation of Marx and Engels’ «Manifesto of the Communist Party».

The author considers the visual artistic-architectural aspect of gardens still in existence, or as they are represented in paintings. He also studies the contemporary poetic descriptions by scholars and humanists and their sources, and their relationships with devotional practices and mythological imagery, thus extending the iconological method to famous literary texts and to artistic as well as architectural works considered as symbolic structures. This modern encounter of iconology and ecology results in a reassessment of the role of the garden as part of the urban landscape, and the creation of parks which are protected by law.

Il tema «L’arme e gli amori» che ha coinvolto Ariosto, Tasso e Guarini si è affermato a Firenze alla fine del Cinquecento non soltanto come un modello letterario ma anche come un ideale di comportamento aristocratico. È diventato uno dei temi preferiti del dibattito accademico che ha alimentato l’arte, la letteratura e la politica, ispirando allegorie civiche e dinastiche. Le arti pittoriche, il teatro, la musica e i cerimoniali hanno tratto beneficio da queste formule letterarie creando nuove tradizioni e convenzioni.
The theme «L’arme e gli amori» involving Ariosto, Tasso and Guarini was taken up in Florence during the late16th century not only as a literary model but as an ideal for aristocratic behavior. It became a favourite subject of academic debate which nourished art, literature and politics in a way that inspired dynastic and civic allegory. The pictorial arts, theatre, music and ceremonial all took advantage of these literary formulae creating new traditions and conventions.

Carlo Allioni fu uno dei più insigni botanici del ’700 autore della Flora Pedemontana (1785) una delle opere floristiche di maggiore valore scientifico. Il volume propone la ristampa anastatica di 4 scritti precedenti la Flora e di uno successivo, tutti strettamente legati all’opera principale. Essi testimoniano l’adesione ‘precoce’ di Allioni alla nomenclatura binomia linneana, l’interesse per la didattica, la convinzione dell’importanza scientifica delle collezioni vive e degli exsiccata, l’attenzione per l’iconografia come supporto alle descrizioni.
Carlo Allioni, a distinguished botanist of the 18th century, was the author of the Flora pedemontana of 1785, a work of major scientific importance. The present volume reprints four studies which Allioni published before the appearance of the Flora and a fifth which came later. All are closely related to his principal work, and demonstrate his early acceptance of Linnaean binomial nomenclature, his interests in teaching, his belief in the importance of botanical gardens and herbaria, and his interest in artistic depiction as an aid to scientific description.

Elle montre comment des jardins, à certains moments de l’histoire, furent comme autant de lieux d’expérience qui contribuèrent à la formation de cultures collectives, et d’ idées morales ou politiques.
What is that secret force of gardens that draws mankind into their poetical world? This study, which ranges from ancient to modern times, pays particular attention to French gardens of the 17th and 18th centuries, analyzing the relationship between culturally determined forms of perception, creation and life in the gardens themselves. The author also shows how gardens, in certain historical periods, have played an important role in the shaping of collective cultures and of ethical as well as political ideas.

Gli anni ’50-’60 corrispondono, nella biografia artistica di Luigi Nono, a un periodo notevolmente significativo. Questo secondo volume di studi noniani intitolati a questi anni (di G. Borio, A.I. De Benedictis, V. Rizzardi e E. Schaller) descrivono il debutto darmstadtiano di Nono, la rottura polemica con le avanguardie, le prime esperienze teatrali, i primi contrastati momenti di recezione italiana e la scoperta dei potenziali della composizione elettronica.

It describes his debut in Darmstadt, the controversial separation from the avant-garde, his early theatrical experiences, the initial encounters with an Italian public and the discovery of the potential of electronically composed music.

How do we interpret paintings which concern biblical texts? In this book the artist Jane Boyd and biblical critic Philip Esler offer an entirely fresh set of answers to this question. They provide a new methodology for interpreting such paintings that integrates the three critical contexts (the biblical pre-text, the artist’s environment and today’s viewer), the relevant pictorial tradition, and the closest attention to how the artist has made the painting. They also reveal the technical secret buried in the composition of this particularly challenging work by Velázquez.

Carlo Lasinio (Treviso 1759 - Pisa 1838) è una delle figure più significative della grafica europea fra Settecento e Ottocento. Firmò una vasta ed eterogenea produzione di stampe con soggetti storici, folcloristici, umoristici, caricaturali, ritrattistici e di riproduzione da opere d’arte, tramandandoci anche aspetti sociali e ricordi della vita fiorentina. La sua passione per le tecniche incisorie lo portò ha sperimentare nuovi mezzi, con eccellenti risultati. Realizzò volumi completamente incisi da lui e collaborò alla collezione de «I Proverbi».
Carlo Lasinio (Treviso 1759 - Pisa 1838) is one of the most significant figures in late 18th and early 19th century European graphics. He produced a vast heterogeneous range of prints on historical, folkloristic and humoristic topics as well as caricatures, portraits and reproductions of works of art thus preserving for us various aspects of Florentine life. He experimented with new engraving techniques obtaining excellent results, completed entire volumes with his own engravings and collaborated on the collection of «I Proverbi».

Nel Quattrocento la mobilità ebraica fra l'Italia settentrionale e centrale favorì il sorgere di una rete di relazioni basata sull'appartenenza religiosa e la reciprocità delle partecipazioni finanziarie. Su questo intreccio si fondò la “repubblica senza territorio” degli ebrei. In un contesto storico e geografico comune, su piani paralleli, contigui ma differenziati, coesistettero il mondo dei cristiani e quello degli ebrei. Il volume esamina la presenza ebraica nel territorio veronese del Quattrocento e in alcuni centri padani fra Medioevo ed Età moderna.
The mobility of Jewish banks between northern and central Italy in the 15th century favored the formation of a network of relationships based on shared religion and mutual financial interests which eventually gave rise to a Jewish “republic without territorial borders”. Christian and Jewish worlds coexisted in a common historical and geographical space along parallel but distinct lines. The author focuses on the presence of Jews in and around Verona in the 15th century and in various localities in the plain of the Po from the middle ages to modern times.

Giulio Preti (Pavia 1911-Djerba 1972) is one of the leading Italian philosophers of the 20th century. His works cover a wide range of topics, from epistemology to the philosophy of language, from ethics to the history of logic. He taught at the University of Florence from 1954 and left a lasting impression on his students, among them the editor of this volume. This collection of essays, devoted to Preti’s thought and personality, summarises his heritage and illustrates the relevance it has in today’s philosophical debates.

Although he always emphasized the innumerable advantages of democracy he never hesitated to denounce the signs and risks of degeneration which could end in one-party rule, statism and corruption.

Francesco di Giorgio's knowledge of machinery and his experience as an hydraulic engineer, painter and sculptor accompanied him from Siena to Urbino where his architectural works for Federico da Montefeltro were among the most original of the late 15th century, as were his treatises. The essays in this volume investigate the reasons for this on the basis of an accurate analysis of the historical context, a comparison between his artistic, treatise and architectural production and discussions on the influence on major architects of that period.

Questa lettura della «Schöne Müllerin» di Wilhelm Müller e Franz Schubert (1823) colloca il ciclo liederistico in una prospettiva interdisciplinare multipla. La psicologia della musica illustra come l’ascoltatore esperisca la strutturazione temporale dell’opera. Di pari passo, gli strumenti della psicopatologia fenomenologica aprono squarci rivelatori sullo struggente percorso esistenziale del protagonista, il Mugnaio. L’interpretazione viene infine contestualizzata nel rapporto intellettuale e sentimentale che legò il musicista all’amico poeta Johann Mayrhofer.
This reading of Wilhelm Müller’s and Franz Schubert’s «Die schöne Müllerin» (1823) approaches the song cycle from multiple interdisciplinary perspectives. Music psychology will be used to demonstrate how the listener experiences the temporal dimensions of the work. At the same time, the tools of phenomenological psychopathology can reveal much about the principal character’s – the miller lad’s – existential journey through life. This interpretation culminates by contextualizing the cycle in the intellectual and emotional relationship binding Schubert to his friend, the poet Johann Mayrhofer.

From one of the early examples of a ‘group portrait’ frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli in the private chapel of Palazzo Medici Riccardi, to the codes of public and private self-portrayal, and to the idea of a portrait as the ‘Holy Family’, this work reveals a formerly unknown aspect of the Medici’s political propaganda. The essays and research retrieve the phases of the collections and remnants of furnishings, from marble works to the pieces of furniture used to exhibit them.
