MATERIA
XIII Colloquio Internazionale del Lessico Intellettuale Europeo
Roma, 7-8-9 gennaio 2010
A cura di Delfina Giovannozzi e Marco Veneziani

The contributions gathered here investigate the historical evolution of the polysemous term «matter» from Greek philosophy to Gnosticism, from Christian philosophies to Medieval Latin dictionaries, to the Renaissance. The Modern Age period is investigated by analysing texts of Telesio and Bacon, as well as 17th-century science and philosophical systems. Also investigated are the interpretations found in the French Enlightenment, in Kant’s philosophy, and Schelling’s and Hegel’s philosophy of nature.

PIERO MARTINETTI. LETTERE (1921 - 1942)
A cura di Pier Giorgio Zunino. Con la collaborazione di Giulia Beltrametti

Gathered here are about 100 unpublished letters of one of the most prominent figures of early twentieth-century Italian philosophical culture. Sceptical about the feasibility of democracy, critical about socialist materialism, Martinetti emerges as a rare «inner emigrant» in these letters, which also provide original insight into the nature of the long dictatorship and the historical conditions that gave rise to it. Among his correspondents were Croce, Gadda, Cagnola, Einaudi, Nina Ruffini

Giuseppe Savoca
L'INFINITO E IL PUNTO
Letture di poesia tra Ungaretti e Cattafi

This book is a study about poets (Ungaretti, Saba, Montale, Cattafi) and critics (Muscetta and Marchese) in the spirit of the themes underlying the hendiadys in the title. Analysis proceeds by interpreting texts often related to Pascal’s meditations on the concepts of infinite and spatial point, and to Leopardi’s Infinito. The basic perspective is European literature from Schleiermacher (the great Romantic theoretician of the finite and infinite) to Baudelaire’s «aspiration towards the infinite».

LA PAROLA E L'IMMAGINE
Studi in onore di Gianni Venturi
A cura di Marco Ariani, Arnaldo Bruni, Anna Dolfi e Andrea Gareffi

Painting tends to convey moral meanings through symbols, while literature represents abstract concepts through metaphors and corporeal images. The volumes revolve around this central theme and are divided into sections: the Middle Age and Dante’s «visible speech» (mutual attraction between art and poetry), the 16th-century triumph of painting as «figurative word», the Ferrara of Ariosto and Tasso, 18th-century Enlightenment and Neoclassicism, the extraordinary fusion of imagination and literature in 20th-century imagery.

Jean Racine
POESIE SACRE
Cantiques spirituels. Hymnes traduites du Bréviaire Romain. / Cantici spirituali. Inni tradotti dal breviario Romano
Introduzione, traduzione e note di Irene Santori

The Cantiques Spirituels, a fine paraphrase of texts from the Scriptures, were composed after Racine’s retirement from the theatre. The Hymnes were translated from the Roman Breviary by the young Racine, revised in his mature years and eventually condemned for Jansenist heresy. Found at the extremes of the Racinian corpus, these sacred poems create a deep, intimate connection between the young and mature lyricist, echoing throughout the biblical and secular tragedies.
