This volume – dating back to the first half of the 17th century and attributed to historian Costantino Gigli – entered the English royal collection in 1762. The drawings mostly documented, many of which are lost, date from the 13th to the 15th century, and belong to ages and typologies neglected at that time. This document is therefore valuable for knowing and reconstructing an important part of the statuary in Rome’s churches.

The young Filippo de Pisis collected a herbarium of dried plants, later donated to the Botanical Museum of Padua where it was broken up. Locating and reuniting the works took five years. The authors of this research highlight de Pisis’s tendency to ‘observe’ the vegetable kingdom, they then analyse the botanical and landscape profile of the herbal collection. Images and botanical tables enrich the essay, proving the scientific quality of the collection examined.

The scientists of the time clearly used «observation» and «experience» as technical terms, with a cautious (and ambiguous) approach too often neglected even in recent historical research.

When Plato’s texts were once again available in the Latin West, Boethius’s Consolatio, the major source of Platonism in the Middle Ages, continued to stimulate philosophical-theological reflection in the writings of authors such as Valla, Pomponazzi, Lipsius, Descartes, More and Leibniz. The results of this reflection are found in 16th- and 17th-century commentaries on the Consolatio: starting from the Commentaria by Murmellius, who defended Boethius’s prescience from Valla’s criticism.

Ideological and practical reasons underlying the original order of the books are also explained.

Subscribed in the age of the printing press (1520), the De incantationibus was circulated widely in manuscript form for over thirty years. A detailed codicological, palaeographical and historical analysis carried out on the sixteen surviving witnesses traces the spread of Pomponazzi’s natural explanation of magical phenomena, which was later banned as heretical by the Church. This study also provides an overview of manuscript book production methods in the early Modern Age.

This Supplemento completes the cataloguing of the 15th- and 16th-century editions owned by the Franciscan Province of Emilia-Romagna. The cataloguing began several years ago and materialized in the catalogue Bibliotheca Franciscana in 1999. Other copies of new editions, or editions already described, have been found recently. Thus, all the volumes printed during these two centuries (139 incunabula and 2,119 16th-century books in all) have been gathered at the Osservanza in Bologna.

The discussion provided a space for analysis and exchange of ideas with no predetermined line of thinking or underlying thesis. Using landscape as a starting point, everybody spoke freely on his Montale, sometimes treating very different topics. Montale’s landscape was explored as a spiritual place, a comprehensive symbol of a unique and rich inner world.
