Abstract: Reprint of Codignola’s essay, published sixty years ago in instalments in the «Archivio Storico Italiano». In his younger years, Codignola, later better known as a member of the Resistance, politician and publisher, did much research on the «Massa Trabaria», a small mountainous area in north eastern Tuscany bordering the Marche and Umbria. Although officially part of the Vatican state, this area developed strong local characteristics. The author describes this turbulent and independent-minded society and the internal and external forces which shaped it, from the early 13th to the first half of the 15th centuries.
